Short selling domain names

Short selling is a very well know term among stock market traders. You sell a stock before you even bought it. Then price drops; you buy it, and profit the gap (hopefully).

Could it be possible to do this with domains? No, but you can do a very similar trick in case you park your domain on SEDO.

In fact, you can have a real nice portfolio of (free) still unregistered domains parked at SEDO and ready to be sold, despite the fact that they are not yours!!!
If you have 50.000 domains on this you’re very likely to receive at least a proposal a day, depending on the quality, of course.

Then, after receiving the proposal, quickly rush and register it at once, and carry on with the negotiations.

Either accept the first offer (which I recommend, since many buyers give up on a counter offer) or put it on auction, which guarantees you the first bid, at least.

So, how can you do this? It’s very easy, you’re just exploiting the weakness of SEDO ownership checking algorithm, on frequency, method and targets.

Here’s how you can have your ghost domains for sell:

  • DELETIONS: Register using a registrar that accepts deletions, like DynaDot. After registering your domains, park them at SEDO, wait 4 days and delete them (domain kitting), receiving your money back. This way you will succeed on SEDO test as the owner of the domains. The only drawback is that your money will be kept on the registrar and not send back to you.
  • ATYPICAL TLDS: Use uncommon tlds from remote countries. This is one of the most successful way of doing this, since you will get a lot of top keywords that catch a lot of attention from buyers browsing SEDO site. In order to be sure SEDO can’t verify ownership on those tlds, check each tlds whois system. If you can’t easily use it, neither can SEDO. Just be sure you can register every domains you ghost park when you get a bid for them.
  • DROPS: If you have some you pretend to drop, register them on SEDO just before they drop. This is the cleanest way to play this game. Just park them on SEDO and never delete them. Pretend you just forgot to remove them after you have dropped them.

Last, but not least, you would not be doing anything illegal, since you’re not selling someone else property. You’re like selling the idea of the domain, like pickydomains.com.

  1. [...] Domain tasting (aka kiting): Register domains at wholesale pricing and if these domains are deleted within the first 5 days of registration, get a refund. This allows you to check your domains’ monetization value (e.g. via type-in traffic) or even short sell them (e.g. by auctioning your kited portfolio or parts of it before you finally decide on buying for keeps or to pass on to your own buyers).
